After finishing their GSF rations packets, Josh was still traumatised by the CwangoMak that the agents had devoured like it was pepperoni pizza. Now that his hunger pains had diminished he really was glad they had passed the delicacy up.

‘Soon you must all rest,’ said Cronun. ‘It is late and you are all exhausted.’

‘Agreed,’ Brox said. ‘But first there is something we must discuss.’

‘Very well.’

Brox stood to his feet and pulled at his waist, adjusting his suit. ‘I know we have just been through a shit-storm from hell, but we need to be prepared for the eventuality that it is going to get worst. We have come up against the enemy a number of times, but those were just scout ships and landing parties: the first wave. There is, no doubt, an entire armada is out there and hell bent on destroying this solar system,’ Brox paced the room, he looked at Syl and Hase. ‘In the future we are from, the majority of this galaxy was kept safe because the GSF conformed to a cowardly and treacherous agreement with the enemy. This time, because of our presence in this timeline, the agreement is no longer in force. In trying to save the past we may have destroyed the future.’

‘Brox, it is not your fault,’ Syl said.

‘I am well aware of that. Ultimately, those bastard aliens and the GSF are responsible for every single death caused by their attack...but if we had accepted the past, and not meddled with it, then countless lives would not have been lost now.’ Brox sighed.

‘There is no point in punishing yourself, Brox,’ Cronun added.

‘My intention is not to punish myself, or any one of you. My intention is to make it clear, that what we do from now is the most important thing anyone in the history of this galaxy will ever do. Everything rides on the future we now make. I fully intend to continue with the mission we set out to complete, but I understand if anyone wants to go their own way.’

‘This is ridiculous,’ Syl said. ‘No one wants to abandon this mission.’

The room fell silent.

‘I can't believe what is happening here,’ Syl continued. ‘We are trained to pull through anything, even something of this magnitude,’ she looked over at Hase, who was unusually quiet. ‘Hase, what are your thoughts on this?’

Hase looked up from the floor. ‘You gotta admit, this is a pretty messed up situation. I mean, what real chance do we have here?’

‘We have a chance, that is all that matters. We stick together and fight this. Since when do you play the odds?’

‘We've already lost one member of the team.’

‘We don't know that.’

Brox intervened. ‘He's right Syl. Whoever wants to leave, they have a good chance of escaping the solar system, but if you leave then you leave now. If you stay, then know this: we don't give up, no matter what happens. Failure is not an option, we will either complete the mission or die trying, and if we do bite the dust then we take a big bite out of the enemy while we're at it.
